Human Security and Terrorism: Understanding convergence and divergence-special case of Afghanistan

Abstract:

Concept of Human security acquired ubiquitous presence in the post cold war world order. Human security is people oriented concept rather than state centric concept. Here attempt has been made to uncover the meaning of human security and to search if there is any correlation among human security and armed conflict or terrorism in specific with the help of case study of the Afghanistan from period 1996 to 2011. Paper begins by detailing about concept of human security and its position in context of terrorism. Later part of article endeavours to search for convergence and divergence among issues of human security and terrorism with regard to the Afghanistan in three phases. Engagement of human development indicators were seems to be helpful in this regard.  Role of Taliban regime, Global war on terror and its implication are also touched upon. Paper concludes on the note that we can find both convergence and divergence in terms of human security and terrorism but we cannot make it as universal norm. Terrorism has several dimensions and we need to have much deeper analysis to understand this complex phenomenon. In context of  the Afghanistan lack of ‘human security’ created fertile ground for breeding of terror activities but presence of external forces, lack of participation of  indigenous / native tribes and enforcement of alien way of life played certain role in resurgence of Taliban and upsurge of terror activities.
